キンマの葉は、新たな始まりや繁栄、親善、信仰などの象徴とされ、多文化が織りなすスリランカ社会の一部として根付いています。

Beetle Leaves are a symbol of prosperity, new beginnings and goodwill, religion & is a part of the multi-cultural Sri Lankan society. It is called Bulath in Sinhalese and is a shiny heart-shaped leaf. The standard betel leaf bundle is 40 leaves, used as a welcome, reverence, renewed family ties, forgiveness and blessings.

キンマの葉は、スリランカでは古くから伝統的に使われてきました。新年の挨拶はもちろん、お嫁に行くときには尊敬の念を込めて村のお医者様へ渡したり、また両親や目上の方からの祝福を受けたりする際にも使われます。
またビジネスにおいても、新年の最初の取引の際はキンマの葉に現金を包んで取り交わされるのだとか。その他、僧侶へのお布施を包む際や結婚式、寺院での儀式でも使われます。

Beetle leaves were used in old traditions in Sri Lanka, where a future wife-to-be would offer the leaves on a betel tray as a respect to the village doctor, or to receive the blessings of a parent, teachers or elders even during the new year, for first business transaction for the new year (money is wrapped in beetle leaf and exchanged between 2 people), offered to the priests, customs at weddings, rituals at the temples as well.

ある伝説によると、キンマの葉は、ナガスという神話の国からコブラによって人間界にもたらされたのだとか。古くはキンマの葉を嗜好品として噛む習慣もあったようですが、葉の先端と茎の部分にはコブラの毒を含んでいると信じられている為、切り捨ててから噛むのだそうです。

この葉は、マレーシアや東アジアからキンマを持ち帰った中国やアラブの商人によって、東南アジア諸国へ伝わったと言われています。

There is a Legend that the betel leaf originated in the mythical land of 'nagas' and was brought to the world of humans by a cobra holding the leaf by its tip. Hence, Betel chewers discard the tip and the stalk of the leaf before they chew it. These leaves were believed to have been introduced to us and other South Asian countries by the Chinese and Arab merchants who brought it from Malaysia and from the East Asian region.
